Welcome to the BMHR/SMHR Breed Color page.  The information on this page has been kindly compiled and given to us by Becky James. The table below is a listing of colors and patterns that are accepted by each breed.  If anyone has information such as registries, other names for a listed breed, missing colors, breeds not listed, access to information for hard to find breeds, etc. please contact Becky, she would love to hear from you!

Breed Colors

CODE KEY:

® = Recognized colors came directly from the registry or association.

“NA” = Currently waiting for information from the registry or association, still looking for information or unable to find information.

 “Abtenauer” = Plain breed names indicate unable to find a registry and information came from various other sources.

“Florida Cracker (Seminole)” = Parenthesis with bold, colored names indicate other names that the breed is known by.  Many breeds have more

     than one name depending on were they are from or what part of the world you are in.

 “Anglo-Arab (American, English, Sardinian)” = Parenthesis with un-bolded black names indicate regional names for the same breed.  A few breeds

     have regional names though they have all of the same characteristics/colors.  The only difference is the county they are bred in.

®American Cream Horse – Color Registry

Must have pink skin. Eyes can be any color but most common are pale blue or a very pale amber. Pink skin may be of a darker shade, more to the tan, but must not be gray or black. It cannot have mottling on the skin. Must have the cream colored coats which may vary from off white to a fairly rich cream but lighter than palomino. The mane and tail may vary from white to cream to rich russet coloring. White marking such as blazes, stars and socks are permitted

®American White – Color Registry

Must have a uniformly, true-white coat and have pink skin. Eye color will vary. Most common are dark brown, dark blue-black, blue, very pale blue and hazel. There is no mottling of skin. Theses horses are born white and do not change color. The white is comparable to a snowy white rabbit or the white areas on a pinto horse.

Andalusian (Iberian Saddle Horse, Iberian War Horse, Spanish Horse, Portuguese, Extremeño, Villanos, Zpata, Zamoranos)

Grey is the predominant color, with chestnut next, then bay. In early times all colors were found with in the breed, including spotted.

Andean (Andino, Morochuco, Peruvian Criollo )

UK: Most common colors are bay and brown with white markings, but black, gray, roans and chestnuts are occasionally seen.

USA: Most common colors are bay black brown and chestnut. Roaning may be found in all the colors. White markings are common.

Columbian Criollo (Columbian Paso Fino, Columbian Walking Horse )

The rules and regulations accept any defined color, only with pigmented skin. White hair on pink skin is disqualified. The less common colors are described as chestnut, a yellowish red, with varieties called roast chestnut, light chestnut and gold chestnut ( the tone is reddish and yellowish with highlights, and generally the legs, nose, tail and main are lighter). May be dapple grey or white. Blue-grey, a mixture of white and black hair; “Porcelain”, white hair with black skin visible through the hair; grayish, white and black hair mixed together; slate grey, mixture of white and black hair that gives a blue sheen. “Straw-colored” is a mixture of hair resulting in a light tone resembling dry straw. “Verbeno grey” is a mixture of white and reddish hair that yields a dark tone with the head very dark. Black , the majority of hair is black, but various tones are recognized: jet black, reddish black, pitchy black (fading black) and “hito” (not a single white hair in the coat, rare). Hazel, term used for bay, “zaino”, dark bay. “Bayo”, buckskin with usually primitive markings, may be found in many tones. Roan. And “deer-like”, similar to the color of deer; the base of the hair is yellowish, and the forehead is black.

®Connemara

Grey, black, brown, bay and dun, with an occasional chestnut or roan. Dun shades were once predominant but are becoming increasingly rare. Many are dun when foaled and turn grey by seven years.

Corsican

Predominantly bay with few white markings.

Criollo (Argentinean, Mexican)

Are found in most colors. Pinto patterns are excluded from registration (they do exist in the Criollo). A great majority of the horses are “gateado” (dun) or “lobuno” (grullo), with primitive markings.

Costa Rican Saddle Horse ( Caballo Costarricense de Paso )

Almost all colors are accepted into the breed association with the exception of pinto. White markings on the legs and a blaze are preferred by most breeders.

May have any base color but must express any obviously pinto pattern, Framed overos are allowed but discouraged. To determine the minimum amount of white, for eligibility, draw and imaginary line from elbow to stifle, the white must be above this line (excluding the head) and be a minimum of 10 inches in length, if the white is in a long, narrow pattern, the length must be at least 14 inches and the width a minimum of 3 inches.

®Icelandic Horse

The most common colors are chestnut, brown, bay or black, there are other colors, including dun, buckskin, palomino, white, dappled grey and pinto patterns. The rarest colors are the wind dapples and the roans.

International Striped Horse – Color registry

Dun-factor striping is the most widely recognized pattern. This is considered a primitive coloration. The brindle dun is probably the most exotic and scarcest kind of stripping. Stripes may encircle the neck and appear on different areas of the body. There are sorrels and chestnuts with dorsal and leg striping.
